The Maleficent Five Yellow
Why is it that Star 5 is notorious for being harmful and malevolent that we need to pacify it every year in Feng Shui?
From numerous experiences and testimonies, when the house sector where the star visits each year is accidentally disturbed, especially by intense activities such as ground breaking or earth digging to the nailing or drilling of a hole on a wall, expect unfortunate and oftentimes catastrophic incidents to surely befall not only just one member of the family, but to all the members living in that particular house.
Some say that it may just be coincidental.. if you want to prove it yourself, I would dare you to try it, but be ready to experience a whirlwind explosion of 'coincidental' misfortunes, from illnesses to financial losses!
The Particulars of Star 5
- For those who have been interested in Feng Shui, you know that Star 5 is one of the 9 Flying stars, but do you know that it is associated with the planet Saturn? In Chinese metaphysics, the stars which were ascertained by the ancient Chinese Philosophers that they discovered unusually affects human life and activities are actually the planets rotating in our universe.
This is how the Flying Stars relate to the planets in Western Astrology:
Star 1 White – Mercury
Star 2 Black – Saturn
Star 3 Jade – Jupiter
Star 4 Green – Jupiter
Star 5 Yellow – Saturn
Star 6 White – Venus
Star 7 Red – Venus
Star 8 White – Saturn
Star 9 Purple – Mars
.The Planet Saturn compared to Earth
Earth is the third planet from the sun and Saturn is the sixth planet. Saturn is the second largest planet in the Solar system. it's equatorial diameter is 120,536 km, 9.58 times bigger than that of Earth, so we can imagine how much greater energy it can create than earth.
As we can see above, star 5 is associated with the planet Saturn, but so as with stars 2 and 8!
For our current period 8, stars 2 and 5 remain untimely, and star 8 which is the wealth star, is very timely. When it becomes untimely, however, star 8 ( which is also controlled by Saturn) will continue to bring wealth and fortune but this time, with some terms and stipulation attached. Due to the massive energy that Saturn can bring, some feng-shui practitioners would opt not to activate star 8 even in it's current timely period; they would advise to leave star 8 alone to work through its own nature and behavior.
In Western astrology, Saturn is considered a powerful planet
(star) whose presence and impact cannot be ignored.
- Star 5's name in Madarin is 廉贞星 or "Lian Zhen Xing". It is commonly called 五黄 (Wu Wang) or translated as "five yellow." In numerology, it is associated with the number 5. As you can guess, the number 5 is unpredictable, it likes to be in constant motion to delight even in the most illusive experiences of the world. This number brings versatility, great independence and the unwillingness to follow and conform to standards.
- Main Location: Star 5's original home in the Bagua is at the center. It's massive energy brings balance to the center. The center is not associated with any of the 8 trigrams so the luck or misfortune it can bring can dissipate throughout the other sectors and oftentimes to all the residents in the household.
- When star 5 is at the center of the Bagua, it will be well-behaved, and can even bring fortune and luck ( professional advice is needed to use star 5 for wealth and fortune though...) However, when it flies and visits the other sectors yearly, due to its massive size and energy, when accidentally triggered by activity that occurs for more than 6 hours in a day, star 5 creates an imbalance which in turn produces the ill effects when disturbed.
- In the year 2022, star 5 will be at its home at the center again!
- Star 5 is of an Earth Element.
In the Cycle of Elements:
Fire creates Earth ( Fire energizes Earth)
Earth destroys Water ( the sight of Water will excite Earth )
Wood destroys Earth ( Wood will irritate and provoke Earth) and only Metal will be able to exhaust and deplete Earth of its energy!
Even though Wood can destroy Earth, due to star 5's robust and powerful energy, wood will only further agitate it as it tries to protect itself, thereby fiercely destroying everything and everyone around it!
A combination with the good stars (1, 4, 6, 8 and 9) may bring sudden wealth but oftentimes with underlying health issues and some injury, so it is always best to pacify and subdue it.
How to Control Star 5
There are 3 ways to put star 5 under control and calm it's energy:
a) Control by Element
b) Control by Symbolism
c) Control by practical approach
Most Feng Shui practitioners will combine 2 or more approaches to bring a more effective result. No matter what approach is used, the sector where star 5 visits should be kept clean, quiet and with the most minimal or quick activity to keep the sector mostly undisturbed.
To mitigate by element, the placement of metals should adhere to the following aspects to be more effective;
a) the metals should be heavy, preferably round and spherical in shape. Most Feng Shui practitioners suggest a maximum of 60 kg of heavy metal for small or medium sized houses ( one can start with a lesser amount of weight and add more throughout the years on a good metal date) and a minimum of 60 kg for huge houses.
b) the metals should be placed on the floor that is clean and free of clutter and where qi or energy can freely flow.
c) the placement or installation of metals on the sector should be made at the proper timing on a "good metal date".
This third aspect is important. If the metals have been at the sector as fixtures ( i.e. metal door, metal window blinds or frames, metal stairwell side handles, etc...) they only serve as decorations or fixtures if not placed following the proper metal date timing ( unless one would remove them and re-install them again at the said date)
The elemental direction where Star 5 visits is also considered by most Feng Shui practitioners. An example is in 2018, star 5 visited the North sector which is associated with the water element, Earth destroys water but is strengthened by the metals cures, so water should be somehow subdued by wood to create balance. Another is in 2020, star 5 visited the East sector which is associated with the wood element. Wood destroys Earth but it is also destroyed by the metal cures, so wood should be strengthened by some water placement. (yin water).
Here are the sectors where star 5 will visit in the next coming years:
2021 ~Southeast
2022 ~Center
2023 ~Northwest
2024 ~West
2025 ~Northeast
2026 ~South
There are however some isolated instances when star 5 can pull in luck for the whole year. It is when it forms a straight line across the center of the Bagua or 9 square grid with the other stars 2 and 8,
propitiously forming a 2-5-8 formation. If such is at the case, some practitioners will leave it alone for the year. Others would however still put in the metal remedies.
All houses built during Period 8 or are Period 8 compliant will carry this combination as the base stars.

Although I try to refrain from using symbolism as remedy in Feng Shui, nonetheless, here are some classical Feng Shui Cures that most practitioners continue to use.
a) the most famous is the 6 metal rod wind chimes. ( I believe that it is the metal element of the chimes that does the cure!)
Traditionally in Feng Shui, the wind chimes are used to neutralize the 5 Yellow and the Illness star 2. The shape, color and sound of the chimes conform to the characteristics of metal elements as follows:
Color: white, silver, gold or metallic
Number: the number 6 (represents the Heaven Trigram or the Father)
Shape: round, circular, oval
Material: things made of metal like copper, brass, silver, gold, iron, aluminum
b) the Chinese Emperor metal coins
Ancient Chinese Feng Shui coins are commonly used as traditional symbols for wealth luck, to enhance the positive qi and for protection from negative 'killing' shas. They are round in shape ( representation of Heaven) with a square hole in the center ( representation of earth). The coins have 2 sides, the yang side wherein 4 Chinese characters according to the emperors of past powerful dynasties are engraved, and the Yin side that often has 2 Chinese characters
They are usually tied in a cluster with a red string. Here are the symbolic meanings of the number of coins tied into a knot
3 coins~ symbolizes the trinity of heaven, earth and man. It is used for attracting wealth luck and prosperity
5 coins ~ used as a protection against danger and harm and for also attracting wealth. It signifies the 5 elements (metal, wood, water, fire and earth) for a balanced and harmonious life.
6 coins ~ Six is considered as a lucky number in Feng Shui. It signifies celestial luck for attracting the support of noble people or mentors especially in the workplace. It is used to suppress the yellow 5 star.
8 coins ~ It is a lucky number which represents prosperity and abundance. The number "8" is the most auspicious number of the 20 years cycle of Period 8 (2004-2023)
9 coins ~ The 9 coins tied into a tassel is considered to bring a growing auspicious energy since it represents the next 20 years cycle period that will enter in 2024. 9 is a number that signifies the unity between heaven and earth. (completion)
10 Coins ~The 10 Emperor coins is an auspicious cure that enhances the flying star 1 and symbolizes an effective metal element. The 10 coin strand represents wealth, fame, fortune and success.
- Control by Practical Approach
a) Missing sector or if star 5 visits a sector that is seldom used such as a storeroom or a closet
As shown in the picture below, if the NE is a missing sector of the home and star 5 is visiting that sector, it's impact will not be as huge when accidentally disturbed since the sector is missing. If you have a window or door to the missing sector, just manage to keep it closed at all times or do not use it as often. The same applies if the sector where star 5's visit falls at a storeroom or closet that is seldom used. Just keep the door to the closet closed most of the time.
b) 5 Yellow in the birth chart of a house
In Flying star Feng Shui application for the home, the natal house chart is assessed based on it's age ( when it was built) and it's house Facing.
Here is an example of a natal chart of a house which is compliant with Period 8 ( house was built in Period 8 or the house was remodeled to comply with period 8) that is facing West 2:
When we locate the yellow star 5 in the chart above, we can see that it is a mountain ( sitting) star at the SE, a water star (facing) at the North, and a base star at the SW.
Feng Shui corrective measures are first placed for the most active yellow star which is the water star at the North, superseded by the mountain star at the SE.
The Base star is normally unsubstantial. However in this case ( as with all period 8 houses), the yellow 5 base star forms a straight line of 2-8-5 from the SW, crossing the center through the NE which can be auspicious.
